Advocate for National Strategy Implementation
In November 2024, the federal Department of Health, Disability, and Ageing released the National Strategy for Organ Donation, Retrieval and Transplantation. This Strategy, which was created by Commonwealth, state, and territory governments, provides a framework for the high-level future direction of the Australian organ donation, retrieval and transplantation system.
“The Strategy will underpin policy and program delivery to provide enhanced access to transplantation for all Australians who need it.”
Priority area 2 of the strategy is about equitable access to organ transplantation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with one of the goals being that policy and programs will break down barriers and improve access to transplantation. The Strategy says that the work of the NIKTT will inform implementation against the priority area.
To date, however, there is no concrete implementation plan for this Strategy. You can help ensure one is made, so that the laudable goals and aims are achieved.
What you can do. Email one (or all) of these people:
-
Your local member of the Jurisdictional Organ and Tissue Steering Committee
-
Your local elected member
-
Your jurisdictional minister for health
-
The Federal Minister for Health
Ask them what they are doing about implementation of the Strategy and what resourcing is being provided to implement the Strategy, especially priority area 2.
We have created a basic letter template for you to adapt below.
We have compiled a list of state, territory, and federal ministers below. Note, this is current as of July 2025.
