Kidney yarns

This guide offers question prompts to help you build meaningful connections, understand patient journeys, and provide best practice support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with kidney disease.

The questions are based on years of extensive experience from both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with kidney disease and transplantation, as well as nephrologists, nurses, transplant coordinators, and Aboriginal Health Practitioners.

I’d like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we meet today and pay my respects to Elders past and present. I recognise the unique place held by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the original Custodians of the lands and waterways across the Australian continent, with histories of continuous connection dating back more than 60,000 years. I acknowledge their enduring cultural practices of caring for Country, and I acknowledge that this always was, and always will be, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land and waters.

Some of these questions may be obvious to you, but from the experiences encountered by many, the following questions are either not asked often enough or are the questions patients want clinicians to be asking.

If we're missing a question or topic you think it critical people consider when working with First Nations kidney consumers, please add it using the box at the bottom of this page.
